How popular was gundam wing in japan?

***-->

i’m a huge gundam fan in general, i love all the sagas but gundam wing is my favorite as it introduced me to gundam and started me on my anime craze back when toonami didn’t suck. the question i have is, i know the original series of gundam or granted the UC era was very popular and i read often that GW was very successful as a spin off, but how good was it to the japan crowd? after seeing so many new stories of the UC era, was GW really taken in that much cause it was different? more or equal to G gundam when it premired?
i don’t believe GW crashed, gundam X sure did and was cut really short while GW did finish well on its own

    Well, it was quite successful enough that they decided to made an OVA sequel (Endless Waltz) of it, and definetly more sucessful than G Gundam.

    It was also successful enough that merchandises related to it are repeatedly released, it was surely successful enough to be parodied in SD Gundam Force.

    But it was definetly not as succcesful as it was in North America.

    The reason Gundam Wing was NOT continued in Japan is because… Sunrise basically spended a LOT on three Gundam series in the mid 1990′s (Gundam Wing, G Gundam, and Gundam X), AT ROUGHLY THE SAME TIME!

    So maybe that they prefer to stay quiet for a while, and besides they prefered to do a new story like Turn A Gundam (a pseudo sequel to ALL previous Gundam series) in 1999.

    The very popular animated franchises in Japan usually though have 3-5 series that run in sequence.

    Gundam Wing just happened to become a ‘three in one’ package at the same time, if it was a stand alone series it’s no doubt that it probably get one or two TV series sequel of its own.

    For the record, Gundam 00 in a kind of way can be considered as a sequel to Gundam Seed despite it took place in a totally different story, since it exploited the popularity of the two last series. Just like Transformer: Galaxy Force (a.k.a. Cybertron) did with Micron Legend and Super Link.

    hmm I remember reading that iw wasnt that popular in japan and the show crashed and it ended too soon (like most animes) but it got popular through re-runs…but I dont know how popular
    edit: sorry I was referring to mobile suit gundam (the original one) but gundam wing was very popular as it opened up to a new generation of fans and it got its own movie (endless waltz) and was eventually decided to be dubbed in 2000 for America (so it had to be pretty big to make it to america)
    hope I could help a little, I couldnt find any graphs or broadcasting views, sorry

    Gundam WING isn’t very popular anymore.. its very old and the quality is poor.. other new Gundam series are more popular like the well known Gundam Seed /Destiny.. but they get old .. and as more come out.. it gets boring cuz its practitaly the same thing… most of them are simular anyways.. so i dont really watch it anymore.. but yea sorry if this doesn’t help
