Model train sets are found in all sizes and shapes and it’s probably correct to assume that the number of different train sets equals the actual different types of real trains. These model sets range from passenger trains to freight trains and from the most typical steam engines of the past to those that replicate the most recent engines including the futuristic fancy mono trains. Many train sets also include the buildings and scenery needed to begin a fundamental layout plus the basics which consist of the engine, cars, tracks, and transformers. These model layouts also reflect the collector’s knowledge, imagination and skills.

For the serious model train enthusiast, given the initial layout costs, collecting model trains can become a very expensive hobby; however if collecting model trains is just a fun thing then there are less expensive alternatives from which to choose.

Collecting these train sets is also a multifaceted hobby with many approaches to factor in as the collector considers how to bring the idea to completion. One area to be considered would be the possibility of working within a period of time which could include the type train involved, the sounds associated with that time, and the general atmosphere of the entire period. If for example the collector decides to create a set stylized after that of the 19th Century, then it is important that he or she design the set to be consistent in all areas with that period of time.

One of the most important constituents to be considered is the sound, which is undoubtedly one of the major components of a model train set design. How would a 19th Century train whistle sound, or a barking dog, a car’s motor and horn, or any of the other myriad sounds associated with that century? Anything related to the designated time period will be thoughtfully considered by the serious model train collector.

Although not many collectors realize it, when setting up and working on model trains some caution should be exercised to prevent burns, cuts and other possible injuries. Those who set up model trains work with blades, possibly toxic paints and electricity so it is important to use common sense and avoid cuts, toxicity, and burns. Keep the working area clean, organize the tools and to prevent air borne particles from getting in someone’s eyes use safety goggles when working on the train set.
