What Is Everything I Need To Know About Gundam Wing?

***-->

I’m trying to impress a fan of the Gundam Wing Series. What were sad scenes? Who died? Romance? Plot twist? My friend hates Relena. Why should anyone dislike Relena? Can you summarize the series for me?

P.S. Assholes like "Moosically," please don’t bother answering this question.

    The series takes place in the year AC ("After Colony") 195. The nations of the world (and the surrounding space colonies) are run by a totalitarian government called the United Earth Sphere Alliance. The earth and people on it are the "preferred class" who monopolize and marginalize those who live on the space colonies. The Alliance’s elite military forces are known as the Organization of the Zodiac, more commonly known as "OZ," which is run by a scheming aristrocrat known as Treize Khushrenada (pronounced "TRAYZ KOOSH-ren-ah-dah"). OZ keeps the peace through the use of giant mecha known as mobile suits.

    Five rogue scientists commence a plan called "Operation Meteor, " from five different space colonies send five advanced mobile suits called "Gundams." Each of these suits is piloted by a young man. The "main" character is Heero Yuy, a somewhat emotionless and very mission-focused man. He sometimes seems more like a robot than the suit he pilots (The titular "Wing Gundam"). The other pilots are the happy-go-lucky Duo Maxwell (who pilots Gundam Deathscythe), the stoic Trowa Barton (Gundam Heavyarms), the gentle Quattre Raberba Winner (Gundam Sandrock), and Chang Wufei (Shenlong Gundam).

    When Heero crashlands on earth, he is found by Relena Darlian, the daughter of the the Alliance’s prime minister. In a cold, matter-of-factly sort of way, he tells Relena, "I’m going to kill you." Part of the "hate-on" that people have for the character is what could, to the "Twilight" fans in the audience, be called "The Bella Swann Effect." She instantly falls head over heels for the guy that says he’s gonna kill her. Really, the guy’s got the personality of a plank of wood, but she spends the entire series (more or less) obsessing over the guy.

    In broad strokes, the show is about the five hero characters and their attempts to overthrow the tyranny of the Alliance. It also details the rivalry between Heero and the mysterious Zechs Merquise, OZ’s masked ace pilot. It’s a really long and complicated story so I’ve included the Wikipedia page on the show that has a *very* broad plot summary.

    The big romance (such as it is) is between Heero and Relena. Most of the time it pretty much amounts to Relena essentially throwing herself at Heero and Heero ignoring her, which, again, is part of why many fans find Relena to be such an annoying character.

    There are other, lesser relationships between the major supporting characters and various female characters in the show, but they don’t get a lot of airtime and the strength of those bonds are mostly implied rather than given any real depth within the scope of the series.

    The major plot twists of the show include the fact that Relena is actually a daughter of the pacifistic Peacecraft family and thus a crucial element to ending the war between Earth and the colonies. At this point, when the reveal is made that Relena is now pivotal to the plot of the show, most Anti-Relena fanboys and fangirls start really frothing at the mouth. Further, it is revealed that Zechs is really her brother, Milliardo Peacecraft, who has assumed the Zechs identity in order to bring OZ (and Treize) down from within.

    Not a lot of major character deaths in this series. There are minor characters who die and major characters who get hurt that cause angst and heartache, but not to the degree of some other Gundam series.

    Watch the anime. I’m not taking the time to explain the view points of each nation and pilot in the war. They each have good reasons and theres a lot of characters that would need to be explained..
